Talking to students about health issues, including puberty or HIV and AIDS can be a tough topic. This year, nurses in the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District have taken the topic off the shoulders of classroom teachers.
Bernie Bien, the nurse at Hidden Valley and Harriet Bishop elementary schools, said nurses are natural teachers on “the sensitive topic.”

There will be an information night at Envision Academy of the Arts at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 16, at the Burnsville Performing Arts Center, 12600 Nicollet Ave., Burnsville.
Prior Lake-Savage Area Community Education Services and Burnsville-Eagan-Savage Community Education will co-sponsor two events that feature Pam Smieja, a domestic abuse survivor, speaking about her experiences.
StringWerks, Burnsville’s Youth Orchestra Program, will present a winter concert at 4:30 p.m., Saturday, March 20 in the Mraz Center at Burnsville High School, 600 E. Highway 13, Burnsville.
This year’s carnival at M.W. Savage Elementary School, 4819 W. 126th St., Savage, is set for Saturday, March 20 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
The event is open to the public and includes games, prizes, inflatable bouncers, a raffle and a silent auction.
For the 16th time since 1992, students from Burnsville High School qualified to participate in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) — the premiere science competition in the world for students in ninth through 12th grade.
Playing Cinderella and the Prince, ninth-graders Erica VonBank and Jonathon Mundy, both from Savage, are the leads in Eagle Ridge Junior High School’s version of the classic play, “Cinderella.” Director Amy Stead said the play is a combination of the Rodgers and Hammerstein, Disney and ABC Television versions of the play. The play will be performed at 7 p.m., March 11-13, 16, 19-20 and at 3 p.m., March 13 and 20 in the Performing Arts Center at the school, 13955 Glendale Road, Savage. Tickets are $8 at the door.
